Jodi picoult wolves5/11/2023 He and Cara have to decide their father's fate together. Suddenly everything changes: Edward must return home to face the father he walked out on at age eighteen. Then comes a frantic phone call: Luke has been gravely injured in a car accident with Edward's younger sister, Cara. Edward understands that some things cannot be fixed, though memories of his domineering father still inflict pain. He has written about them, studied their habits intensively, and even lived with them for extended periods of time. Luke Warren has spent his life researching wolves. "Perennial bestseller" ( Publishers Weekly, starred review) Jodi Picoult tells an unforgettable and gripping story about family secrets, love, and letting go in Lone Wolf.

Gwyneth Paltrow Recalls "British Press Being So Horrible" After Her 'Shakespeare in Love' Oscar Win: "Totally Overwhelming" The Runaway Duke by Julie Anne Long5/11/2023 What books inspired me to write about Cress and Dev? Before I dive into the books I would love for you to read, I want to note that I’m not going to touch Flowers From the Storm by Laura Kinsale in this post. What Cress really does is break out of the life she had to seek out something better, the adventure she deserved. First, she gets waylaid by Dev while he’s a highwayman, then she has to hire Dev to break her brother out of prison. My favorite runway romances inspired me to write about my own runaway heroine, Cress Darewood. The wonderful thing about our digital age is that you can find those great books you read when you were fifteen and relive that adventure over and over again. The historical context makes it more interesting because it was completely unacceptable a century ago for a woman to take off with a man she barely knows. When she makes that decision and leaves with the hero, I have to keep going to find out what happens next. I connect with the heroine right away because I grew up in a small town and constantly dreamed of running off. That’s why when I find a book where the heroine takes off with the bad boy, I’m hooked. Who hasn’t had that day when you look around and go, “I’ve got to get away.” I understand why a person would want to though. Also, growing up, every boy I knew went to my church. I never ran off with the bad boy, which comes more from a lack of inclination than anything else. Sugar land by tammy lynne stoner5/10/2023 "The story takes many delightful twists and turns, always described succinctly and colorfully by this narrator, who is irresistible even on days when she's 'retaining enough water to grow rice in Arizona'. Once there, she befriends inmate and soon-to-be legendary blues singer Lead Belly, who sings his way out (true story)―but only after he makes her promise to free herself from her own prison. Terrified, Miss Dara takes a job at the Imperial State Prison Farm for men. It's 1923 in Midland, Texas, and Miss Dara falls in love with her best friend―who also happens to be a girl. ravishing debut." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review) A novel of a lesbian coming of age in Depression-era small-town Texas: "The love child of Fannie Flagg and Rita Mae Brown. The jungle sinclair5/10/2023 Sinclair embraced socialism wholeheartedly within months of being introduced to it, and, except for a brief interlude during World War I, he would remain a committed member of the Socialist Party of America for decades thereafter. 'The Jungle' initially appeared in a socialist newspaper. At one point, he also stumbled upon a laborer’s wedding party, which served as the inspiration for his opening chapter. For “The Jungle,” a 26-year-old Sinclair spent seven weeks in Chicago, touring stockyards and slaughterhouses and interviewing the laborers there, along with priests, bartenders, policemen, politicians and social workers. Yet he reported his books much like a journalist. Unlike most other muckrakers, such as Ida Tarbell and Lincoln Steffens, Sinclair mainly wrote fiction. Sinclair is arguably the best known of the so-called muckrakers, the forerunners of today’s investigative journalists who in the early 1900s exposed widespread corporate and political malfeasance. Uh… He nails it!īruce Wayne/Batman was “killed” in Joker’s Endgame - but Gotham City can’t do without a Batman ‘cos it’s full of widdle babies! Enter Powers Corp who’ve bought up Wayne Enterprises and produced their own Mecha-Batman. If you want to read exactly what I thought was wrong with this one, take a peek at Sam's review. But this was (to me) riddled with weird story choices, & odd characters. The premise is that there's some skinny villain with a sunflower on his face, handing out superpower pills. Literally.įor a whole lotta contrived reasons, Jim is chosen by the Powers Company (who I'd never heard of till this volume) to become the next Batman. So, this time he's not pinging around in the timeline, he's just got some weird form of Lazarus Juice induced amnesia.or something.Īnd what's with the facial hair swap? I mean, Jim shaved off his lip pelt, so we don't get treated to a Bat-Stache, but Bruce has it covered. What? Are there actually readers out there who think that 'it's time' to move on? That we 'need' a different person under the cowl? I would love to know why Bruce has has been replaced as Batman. What the hell is the point of this plot? Anyone? When I said I liked Adult Themes in my comic books, I did't mean I wanted the writers to take a page out of AARP.ĭid they just give Bat-Gordon an RV to try and make him relevant?īat Truck, my ass. The stoic demeanor that earned Galloway the nickname The Tin Man is tested as he reunites with an old flame, becomes entangled in a Secret Service investigation, and does battle with old enemies.Ī story divided into twelve songs from Jimmy Spartan’s final album. He’s not certain how bad his condition has deteriorated, but when Galloway is attacked in broad daylight by men he assumed were figments of his imagination, he realizes the threat is real and his condition is putting him and anyone nearby at risk. However, when the client closes the meeting by putting a gun under her chin and pulling the trigger, his sense of obligation drags him down a path he may not be ready to travel.Īs Galloway pieces together the final days of rock and roll legend Jimmy Spartan, he struggles to sort through his own issues, to include having the occasional hallucination. He should simply reach over the desk, give back the envelope of cash that he admittedly needs, and walk away. She expects Galloway to not only solve her brother’s homicide, but recover a vinyl record she believes could ruin his reputation. The client-the sister of a murdered musician-seems a bit off. It’s a case Trevor Galloway doesn’t want. “There are two types of men you must fear in this world: Men who have everything to lose-and men like me.” Grisham jake brigance series5/10/2023 The second will raises many more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And if that’s true for modern poems and for poems in new forms (say, those that resemble text messages), it’s no less true for poems in very traditional forms-the sonnet most of all.īut Hayes isn’t just conducting sonic experiments. As America’s youth poet laureate, Kara Jackson, has recently written, “the most dangerous thing about how we treat poetry is how we let only old white men have it.” What’s true for poetry in general is no less true for particular kinds of poems, techniques, and forms. It depends how you read them, and it depends what poem. Poems can console or upset, soothe or baffle, set the table for a fancy dinner or kick the table over and demand that we start again. Poetry is for everyone, but it can’t be the same thing, or do the same thing, for everyone. How to Survive a Culling of Fake Historical Documents Guess What?
